Charity Service of the Order of Malta

At the Hungarian Charity Service of the Order of Malta (HCSOM), we believe that every human life is valuable and that no life is without purpose. Our mission is to hear the calls for help even from the most remote communities and to help create more dignified living conditions, primarily through the provision of quality healthcare services, as well as access to safe and reliable drinking water and adequate hygiene. In our international work, we are committed to supporting people living in urban segregated areas and slums, as well as assisting refugees and those displaced from their homes, alleviating their suffering.

In 2010, we entered into a high-level agreement with the Hungarian State. Act CXL of 2010 formally recognises our role in international development and humanitarian action, stipulating that the HCSOM and the Government of Hungary “cooperate in the fields of social, healthcare, humanitarian and international development”. As a result, often at the request of the Hungarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, we provide immediate humanitarian assistance in response to crises caused by both human and natural factors, including wars, floods, earthquakes and other disasters.

In recent years, our focus has increasingly shifted towards long-term, infrastructure-based and community development initiatives. Through programmes involving scientific methodologies — including monitoring, exploratory follow-up and restorative or reconstruction interventions — we are present in Africa, Asia and the Middle East.

Our staff are actively engaged in war and conflict zones, particularly in Syria and Venezuela, carrying out specialised tasks to support Hungarian nationals and local populations in need — including those whose situations have largely faded from international attention.
