The Hungarian Charity Service of the Order of Malta is the Hungarian relief organisation of the Sovereign Order of Malta. It is a Christian organisation whose fundamental mission, as set out in its Statutes, is to alleviate human suffering and support those most in need. Our work is primarily carried out in Hungary and across Hungarian communities in the Carpathian Basin, guided by a deep sense of commitment and global solidarity towards the world’s peripheries — particularly Africa, the cradle of humanity, and the Middle East, the birthplace of Christianity.

In our international engagement, we provide assistance locally to victims of natural and man-made disasters, regardless of race, gender or religious affiliation, by building upon and strengthening local partnerships. Our programmes are implemented under professional leadership, drawing on the dedication and strength of our volunteers.

Through the tools of humanitarian diplomacy, we contribute to preventing and alleviating further suffering among vulnerable populations. We participate in bilateral and multilateral cooperation frameworks that initiate and coordinate humanitarian responses through decision-making mechanisms.

For decades, the Hungarian Charity Service of the Order of Malta has been actively engaged in humanitarian and development work in parts of the Middle East and Sub-Saharan Africa. Following the dramatic increase in migration flows across the Mediterranean in 2012–2013, the organisation placed greater emphasis on providing localised support to refugees and migrants. It strengthened its presence in Lebanon, Syria and Jordan, while reallocating additional resources to sustain and expand its ongoing programmes in East African countries, including Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.
